Update
We installed a new 107 kL water tank at Christison Park in November 2024. In response to feedback from the community, we will plant native trees and shrubs during autumn 2025 to help screen the tank from view.

Background
To ensure consistent irrigation to the sports fields at Christison Park and prepare for variable climatic conditions, we're proposing to install a 107 kilolitre (kL) water tank on the south side of the amenities/grandstand building, adjacent to Old South Head Road.
To meet Council’s environmental targets to reduce the use of potable (drinking) water in Council operations, a water conservation study was conducted at Christison Park. This led to the installation of a storm water harvesting system and irrigation for two sports fields. The study also recommended the installation of a 107 kilolitre (kL) water tank to increase storage capacity at the park.
Currently, irrigation of the fields is dependent on potable water and a small amount of storm water collected via the storm water harvesting system. The collection of storm water is limited by the current 55 kL storage capacity at the park, which means that mostly potable water is used for irrigation. This uses vital resources and in dry conditions is increasingly expensive.
To ensure consistent irrigation to the sports fields for an optimum turf cover and to capture the maximum amount of storm water, we’re proposing to install a 107 kL water storage tank in Christison Park on the south side of the grandstand.
As Christison Park was identified as one of Council's top ten water using sites, this project will help meet key targets in Woollahra Council's strategic plans including:
About the proposed tank
The proposed tank is 8.3m in diameter, 2.3m high, constructed in concrete, and connects to the existing 55kL tank to increase the total storage capacity in the park to 162kL.
To reduce the visual impact on the park, we propose the tank be painted a bushland green colour and treated with an anti-graffiti coating. In addition, small trees and shrubs will be planted along the park frontage to screen out the tank.
The tank will be positioned on the south side of the amenities/grandstand building and will not disrupt normal activities such as access for maintenance vehicles and pedestrian access to park amenities.
