Construction commences on the Gap Park Tramway Pathway

5 May 2021

We are pleased to share that construction of the new pathway will soon commence on Monday 17 May 2021. Works will see the bush track that follows the route of the former tram line through Gap Park upgraded to improve access and safety, while also providing an alternative walking experience to the coastal pathway.

The new pathway will be two metres wide with a surface of crushed sandstone and sandstone block edging. A boardwalk will also be constructed over some prominent Fig tree roots, near the southern end, to both protect them. Care has been taken to ensure there will be no impact on sensitive areas of vegetation or archaeological heritage, both Indigenous and European.

Community consultation for this proposal took place between August to December 2019 with an overall positive response. In response to the feedback received, the path material was altered from the original asphalt to crushed sandstone, a more natural and fitting material for the environment the path is located in.

The works are expected to take five weeks, weather permitting, so check back soon for updates on the pathway opening!
