Overview
We seek to conserve buildings in our area that have heritage significance. This includes buildings dating from the 19th and early 20th centuries, and also outstanding buildings from more recent times. These are an important part of the heritage of our local area.
The Woollahra Council Heritage Gap Analysis, endorsed in 2021, identified Modern buildings (built in the period following the Second World War) as a “gap” in our heritage listed buildings and suggested more studies were required to identify significant buildings of the Modernist era in our area.
Our consultants GML Heritage have completed a comprehensive study of 26 buildings, and identified 18 which merit listing as heritage items on the Woollahra LEP 2014. These include a range of apartment buildings and houses by architects such as Harry Seidler, Peddle Thorp & Walker, Allen Jack & Cottier, and Bill Lucas.
The Woollahra Local Planning Panel has considered the planning proposal and provided advice to Council that it should be progressed.
Next steps
- We are open to feedback on the study and recommendations from owners and members of the public, and seeking to provide more information to owners about the implications of a heritage listing.
- The planning proposal to list the items will be referred to a future meeting of Council seeking endorsement to progress to public exhibition (subject to approval from the Department of Planning, Housing & Infrastructure).
- Following public exhibition, a report will be progressed to a meeting of Council responding to the issues raised in submissions. If approved by Council, the heritage listings will be finalised.
At each stage of the process, affected parties will have an opportunity to make submissions to Council.
