Overview
Woollahra Council recognises the importance of public art and we encourage the development of public art and public art opportunities that enhance and complement the identity of our local area and its natural and built assets.
In 2009, we created our first Public Art Policy which guides our approach to public art across the Woollahra Local Government Area. We have recently updated it and we are now asking the community for feedback.
We're inviting members of the community to share their feedback on the draft policy to help shape the final policy adopted by Council.
The updated draft Public Art Policy includes new Council commitments such as:
- commissioning works by living Australian artists
- encouraging philanthropy and donations.
The updated draft policy also introduces several significant changes to align with Council's current strategies and practices including:
- an expanded definition of public art to encompass both temporary and permanent works
- replacement of references to the outdated Public Art Implementation Plan with the Woollahra Arts and Culture Strategy 2024-2028 and the updated Public Art Guidelines for Developers, which are now the primary guiding documents for the policy
- a revised content section which replaces the word "values" with "guiding principles"
- additional sources have been added to the references list to support the updates
- goals have been aligned to the Woollahra Arts and Culture Strategy 2024-2028
- the NSW Government Public Art Toolkit has been added as a relevant planning resource.
We invite you to share your feedback by 28 August 2025.
