Message from the Mayor

We know our local businesses have been hit hard during the pandemic and that small businesses are a vital part of our local community. Together we can help support our small businesses by shopping locally.

We are keen to continue the support we have already offered to small businesses, and this starts with finding out their priorities which will help inform our response. We also want to know the best way for Council to communicate with our small business owners.

We'd love to hear from local small businesses and invite them to complete this short survey. All responses will go in a draw to win a 1 hour free business coaching session.

Survey closes Friday October 30 2020.

Susan Wynne - Mayor of Woollahra

Our support for local businesses

Woollahra Council was one of the first Sydney councils to move quickly in providing support to small businesses in March. To help reduce the economic impact of COVID-19 we launched relief measures valued at more than $5 million including:

  • Rent relief for 6 months for all small business tenants of Council-owned premises
  • For the same period, no fees charged to any small business in the local government area for health, hygiene, licensing and fire safety inspections
  • A waiver on all outdoor and footpath dining fees until December 2020
  • Parking meters were switched off to provide relief for customers in local commercial centres. Time restrictions still apply
  • We promoted Government economic stimulus packages and grants and installed colourful street banners for our commercial centres.

On 24 August Woollahra Council resolved to further support small businesses by:

  • Providing reduced rent relief until 31 March 2021 for small and medium-sized tenants of Council-owned sites where need can be demonstrated
  • Further extending the date for the waiver on outdoor and footpath dining fees/rent until June 2021
  • Hiring an Economic Development Officer to work with small businesses on initiatives.

The financial assistance measures will be notified for 28 days before a final decision by Council on 28 September 2020.
