Construction of the new pathways is now complete!

We recently completed the final stage of this upgrade, delivering a new 120m long and 1.5m wide sandstone path along the top edge of Trumper Park, creating a new safe, pedestrian tree-lined route connecting to Bowes Avenue (previously pedestrians walked on the road).

At the Harris Street end, a new 60m concrete footpath has been installed in addition to two Disability Discrimination Act (DDA) compliant kerb ramps at the intersection of Quarry and Harris Streets and a new picnic setting located directly opposite Council's Quarry Street depot.

Stage one works included an upgrade of approximately 300m of pathway and upgraded stairs to meet disability standards, with by-pass ramps now maximising accessibility for pedestrians, cyclists, prams, mobility scooters and walking frames.

The works also included new sandstone log walls, new park seats and improved bush regeneration works throughout Trumper Park.

About this project

Trumper Park in Paddington is an important green space for the whole community, providing sporting, recreation and relaxation opportunities to a densely populated part of our LGA. Ensuring that people of all ages and abilities can comfortably enjoy our parks is a key priority for Woollahra Council, and upgrading parks for accessibility is identified as an ongoing action in our Disability Inclusion Action Plan.

Council is currently proposing to enhance accessibility to and through upper Trumper Park from Quarry Street to Bowes Avenue via a significant upgrade of its pathways. We have secured funding through the Metropolitan Greenspace Program (2020/2021) and the Crown Reserves Improvement Fund (2020/2021), with Council funding the remainder of the project cost.

Stage One includes upgrading approximately 300 metres of deteriorating pathway with a new 2-metre wide coloured concrete path. The stairs will also be upgraded to meet regulatory standards and include by-pass ramps to maximise accessibility for less-abled pedestrians, cyclists, users of prams, mobility scooters and walking frame devices. Where achievable within the site constraints, these works have been designed to meet the relevant Accessibility Standards.

Works will also include new sandstone log walls, two new park seats, and the continuation and improved protection of bush regeneration works throughout Trumper Park.

Stage Two of the project is currently in the detailed design phase and will consist of a new path along Quarry Street. The location of the path is indicatively shown on the below plan and is subject to detail design and selection of material to ensure the protection of existing trees.

Community consultation

The concept plans for the upgrade were publicly exhibited between 22 August-19 September 2022. As a result of community feedback, the following changes were made to the final design:

  • Footpath material will be plain concrete with some areas to be 'no-fines' asphalt where required in the presence of large tree roots.
  • By-pass bays along the Bowes Ave section of path have been reduced from 4 to 3.
  • Switch-back ramp at the top of the Bowes Ave section of path has been moved further away from the property boundary.
  • Replacement of access paths to tennis courts has been included.
  • Installation of handrails on steep steps beyond Bowes Ave to be investigated (subject to project budget).

Construction

Council have appointed Unicorn Landscaping & Stone Masonry Pty Ltd to undertake these works. Stage One Works will take place from Monday 5 December 2022 - Friday 23 December 2022; and recommence from Monday 23 January 2023 - Late March 2023 (weather permitting). Stage Two Works will then commence thereafter.

Footpath access will be closed temporarily during works. Alternate access can be made via Jersey Road, Thorne Street and Cameron Street. Works will be staged and at times some parking will be temporarily unavailable.

Works will be carried out between 7am and 5pm Monday to Friday, and 7am - 1pm Saturdays.
