What we heard report

The community's feedback in response to the draft DIAP was essential in helping us refine the final DIAP. Below is a table of feedback we heard from the community and how it was used to change the final Plan.

Changes to final Plan

Request that work experience for people with disability be open to adults and not limited to students only.

DIAP changed to include:

Promote that Council welcomes volunteers and work experience students and adults who are living with disability (p.24).

Request that safe access to waterways for recreational purposes, including improved safety structures for aged and people with a slight disability be considered.


DIAP changed to include 2 new actions:

Upon renewal of public wharves safe access to waterways for all people to be considered (p.22).

Council staff in consultation with Transport for NSW to provide advice on safe access to the upgrade of wharf structures (p.22).

Note that the Envoy Audio Device loaned to Home Library Service members may also benefit people living with dementia

DIAP action updated:

Envoy audio device, for the visually impaired, loaned by Woollahra Libraries to Home Library Service members and Library members living with dementia (p.25).

Note that affordable housing for people with disability is not adequate in our community

DIAP action updated with reference to affordable housing:

Actively implement actions in the adopted Woollahra Local Housing Strategy 2021 and Affordable Housing Policy related to promoting inclusive housing design and NSW planning reforms to support increased housing choice including affordable housing to meet a range of different needs (p.20).

Request that Hydrotherapy centre needs to be prioritised by Council

DIAP action updated with change to time frame from: medium term to short term (p.20).

Request for parking permits which are currently provided to registered health care workers providing care for residents, be expanded to cover support workers.

DIAP action updated:

Continue to offer parking permits for registered health care workers providing care for residents and extend to support workers with doctors supporting letter (p.23).

Response to need for digital upskilling for people living with disability and other minority groups is increasing.

DIAP updated:

Investigate and develop a digital skills development program for people with disability (p.24).

Request to replace neurological differences with the term neurodivergent.

DIAP updated:

Identifying training in how to best engage and communicate with neurodivergent staff in response to departmental issues (p.17).

Suggestion for the library to conduct programs for children with a developmental delay who may not have access to NDIS funding yet and not limited to children with Autism. Also to consider a ‘quiet/ sensory storytime session.

DIAP updated:

Develop and implement more inclusive Children’s programs (p.19).

And a new action added:

All Library event and program staff to attend Inclusive Story time training (p.17).

Suggestion for literature/ posters on disability services to be listed in supermarkets, centres, high schools etc.

New DIAP action added:

Actively promote Aged and Disability services and programs across the LGA in high visibility areas and local schools (p.18).
