New seating and planting now complete

7 June 2022

To help further enliven the Rose Bay commercial centre and encourage people to stop, rest, gather and enjoy their surroundings, our Capital Works team have installed innovative new bench seating constructed from recycled plastic on New South Head Road. The project aims to activate this section of the footway with the addition of colourful art and plants.

The bench is located on a section of the footway that has been recently extended, providing urban greening and an eye-catching design for the street. The interwoven seating and plantings provide a buffer zone to New South Head Road and provide a place to rest.

After much research, the team decided on a design made from recycled plastic, as it would be both a durable and sustainability-minded option. The bench is 11.6m long and made up of 430 individual pieces. Over 5000kg of recycled plastic was used: 70 cubic metres of non-compacted waste diverted from landfill, which is the equivalent of over 300 wheelie bins of 240 litres capacity.
